How to maintain your student status in Canada
A study permit is a temporary status in Canada. Students must follow certain conditions to maintain their student status once in Canada.
1. Remain enrolled in a designated learning institution and show progress in your studies.
2. Inform IRCC of any changes in your study permit conditions or if you change school. In some circumstances, students may have to apply for a new study permit.
3. Adhere to the conditions mentioned on the study permit regarding work authorisation. Some permits allow the student to work, however some might forbid it.
There is also a difference between working on campus, off campus, or as an intern.
4. All study permits have an expiration date when the holder must leave Canada. To complete additional courses beyond the expiration date
another study permit is required and must be applied for before the expiration date of the previous permit.
Understanding these rules is crucial, as failure to maintain student status can have a negative impact on following immigration applications. For instance, refusals for subsequent study or work permit applications. Or worse, being ordered to leave Canada and forbidden to re-enter for five years.
